After controversial novelist Salman Rushdie was brutally stabbed, the entire world reacted with shock and outrage. Indian public figures, such as Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, joined authorities in the UK and France in denouncing the episode as an assault on free speech. Rushdie was isolated for around ten years as a result of his novel "Satanic Verses," which caused a fatwa to be declared against him.
