Writing & Translation Books

Dia Dhuit,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m excited to share that my debut dark science fiction novel, Comhrac (Gaeilge/Irish Gaelic for “conflict” or “struggle”), will soon get self-published and crowd-funded via Kickstarter. As I gear up for this exciting journey after extensive developmental editing, I’m searching for at least 3 - 4 dedicated beta readers to provide valuable feedback and refine the manuscript.

Comhrac is not your average sci-fi; it’s a gritty and thought-provoking tale challenging conventions. The narrative is set in a dystopian future, exploring themes of identity, free will, and authoritarianism. Imagine Mr Robot meets Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade.

In the desolate aftermath of a catastrophic tsunami that engulfs the city of Warrang, a young man by the name of Joseph Garrfhiach is thrust into a world defined by political violence and poverty. Haunted by the spectre of his mortality, Joe finds himself trapped in an oppressive dystopia where poverty and political violence reign unchecked.

But Joe’s nightmare has only begun. Forced into servitude by the Australasian state, he becomes a pawn in a brutal war against savage monsters from prehistory. As he grapples with his unravelling psyche and mysterious mystic abilities, Joe is thrust into a battle for survival in a grim, hopeless far future.

To prevail against insurmountable odds, Joe must navigate the treacherous depths of his soul and find the courage to defy destiny. Will he emerge triumphant, or will he succumb to the monster threatening to consume him?

WARNING: Comhrac contains intense graphic violence, sexual content, and nudity, as well as coarse language. Due to these mature elements, reader discretion is advised for all audiences.

Comhrac stands at 75,000 - 90,000 words, and I’m seeking honest opinions to refine and enhance the manuscript before its official launch. The project will commence right away, with completion targeted within a month.

Attached to this job post are the first four chapters of Comhrac to give you an idea of what you're getting into.

Responsibilities:

  • Read the manuscript for Comhrac in its 25 - 30-chapter entirety.

  • Provide constructive plot, pacing, character development, dialogue and overall readability feedback.

  • Identify any inconsistencies, plot holes, or areas where the story can improve.

  • Offer your insights on the general appeal and engagement of the book.

  • Provide detailed comments and suggestions within a reasonable timeframe.

    Qualifications:

  • A passion for science fiction and dystopian genres.

  • Experience with beta reading, writing, or editing.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to provide specific, actionable feedback.

  • Enthusiasm to engage with the material and discuss your impressions.

Additional Information:

This is a remote freelance opportunity. You’ll receive a copy of the manuscript in a digital format, and we can discuss a timeline that works for both of us.

If you’re excited about delving into a thrilling dark sci-fi world and contributing to developing an emerging author's work, I’d love to hear from you. Please include any relevant experience or qualifications in your proposal and your preferred timeline for completing the beta reading.

Thank you for considering this opportunity, and I look forward to discussing Comhrac with you!
