I recently inherited a large wood working shop that hasn't been used in a number of years and added a 48" x 48" Altmill router with 48" rotary CNC spindle. The router has been ordered but is not expected to ship for about 12 weeks. Time to design products.
I aspire to build higher priced designs using old school construction combined with CNC carving and epoxy resins. Designs could be described as dark Alice in Wonderland inspired. Table legs may have subtle cameos but each one will be unique and at least one will be quite ugly. Carved fingers may pry up the edge of a piece from the inside revealing an eyeball peeking out. Table legs may end in a chicken foot holding a ball. A chess board may alternate between wood and blue tinted resin squares with detailed scenes, some dark, beneath.
We will use both wood and resin inlays in both obvious and very subtle places, like hidden beneath the piece or inside a drawer.
Pieces may appear symmetrical but will have 'easter eggs' making each one unique to the others. We will use AI generated images to create 3D accents like ugly cameos and subtle gargoyles. If we design a bed you know that there will be a monster hidden underneath.
The first project will be a cribbage table for four players with a classic hole pattern. Included with the table will be four or more sets of curious pegs. For clarity, this will be a cribbage table with legs, not just the board. I anticipate that we will use three or four species of hardwood and as many colors of resin to complete the project.
I look forward to the process.
