Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced investigative journalist to take on an in-depth story involving alleged misconduct by Oregon Child Protective Services (CPS), abuse of power by a high-ranking public official, and delayed reunification in a family custody case. The story, outlined in a press release, involves a local Oregon family whose children were removed under questionable legal circumstances and who have experienced prolonged separation despite compliance with all state-mandated reunification steps.
Responsibilities:
Conduct a thorough independent investigation into the family's CPS case, including document review, court proceedings, and agency protocols.
Interview involved parties, including the family, legal representatives, CPS staff, and other sources.
Research relevant Oregon and federal laws (ASFA, ORS 419B) and compare actions taken against legally required benchmarks.
Identify and investigate the role of high-ranking government officials, including possible conflict of interest.
Write a fully documented, professionally edited feature story or exposé.
Pitch and/or publish the final piece through a reputable news outlet or platform.
Provide ongoing communication and transparency with the hiring party during the process.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in investigative or investigative-feature journalism
Strong knowledge of legal and government systems, particularly family court and CPS procedures
Exceptional research, interviewing, and narrative writing skills
Ability to maintain journalistic integrity, neutrality, and protect source confidentiality
Background in covering sensitive or human-interest stories, especially in government, legal, or child welfare sectors
Preferred:
Existing media connections or platform for publication
Oregon or Washington state residency (not required, but beneficial)
Familiarity with FOIA/public records request processes
