Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to review and represent an already completed petition that will be submitted to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the IACHR's Rules of Procedure and the American Convention on Human Rights, and will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and effectiveness of the petition in advocating for human rights.
Responsibilities:
Review of Petition Document: Examine the completed petition document to ensure all allegations and legal grounds are clearly articulated, well-supported, and compliant with the IACHR's Rules of Procedure and relevant human rights laws.
Legal Representation: Include your contact information and act as the legal representative for the petition submitted to the IACHR, ensuring that all necessary legal requirements for representation are fulfilled in accordance with the IACHR's guidelines.
Legal Advice: Offer legal advice on potential follow-up actions or responses required from the IACHR, as well as strategies for advocating the petition's merits.
Engagement with IACHR: Liaise directly with IACHR representatives regarding the status of the petition, addressing any inquiries or requests for additional information in a timely and professional manner.
Documentation: Ensure that all communications, correspondence, and documentation related to the petition are meticulously organized and accessible for review and follow-up.
Monitoring Developments: Stay informed on developments within the IACHR and relevant human rights jurisprudence that may impact the petition or the underlying issues raised therein.
Collaboration: Work closely with other stakeholders involved in the case, including NGOs, human rights advocates, and affected individuals, to gather additional evidence or support as necessary.
Requirements:
Education: A law degree from a recognized university.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in human rights law, with demonstrated experience in cases involving the IACHR, particularly in petition processes.
Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the IACHR's Rules of Procedure, the American Convention on Human Rights, and relevant international human rights instruments.
Skills: Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills, along with excellent communication and interpersonal capabilities.
Language Proficiency: Fluency in Spanish or English is required; knowledge of other languages (particularly Portuguese or French) is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with IACHR: Prior experience working directly with the IACHR or similar human rights bodies is highly desirable.
Proven Track Record: History of successful advocacy in human rights cases, with strong references attesting to legal acumen and integrity.
