Join our team to create an immersive virtual reconstruction of Colonial Williamsburg that will transport visitors to 1776. This groundbreaking project aims to digitally preserve and present Colonial Williamsburg's rich historical landscape through cutting-edge virtual and augmented reality experiences, making history accessible to visitors both on-site and around the world.
Primary Responsibilities:
The core focus will be creating a comprehensive "Virtual Colonial Williamsburg" experience, including:
- Leading the development of highly detailed 3D reconstructions of Colonial Williamsburg's historical buildings and environments, with special attention to architectural accuracy and period authenticity. Initial focus will be on creating detailed models of approximately 20% of the town's most significant structures.
- Developing interactive virtual tours of key locations such as the Governor's Palace, Capitol building, and Art Museums, complete with embedded multimedia content and educational resources.
- Creating an augmented reality experience that allows on-site visitors to see historical overlays and reconstructions as they explore the physical grounds.
- Designing and implementing virtual preservation experiences that showcase the work of the Architectural Preservation and Research Department.
Technical Requirements:
- Extensive experience with Unity or Unreal Engine for historical reconstruction
- Proven expertise in architectural visualization and historical modeling
- Strong background in photogrammetry and 3D scanning for historical preservation
- Experience creating optimized real-time 3D environments
- Proficiency in developing cross-platform VR/AR experiences
- Knowledge of WebXR for browser-based virtual tours
- Understanding of cloud infrastructure for content delivery
Historical & Educational Expertise:
- Demonstrated experience working with historical preservation projects
- Understanding of 18th-century colonial architecture and construction methods
- Ability to collaborate effectively with historians, archaeologists, and curators
- Experience creating engaging educational experiences for diverse audiences
- Knowledge of museum and cultural heritage best practices
Key Projects Will Include:
- Detailed 3D reconstruction of Colonial Williamsburg circa 1776
- Development of virtual interior spaces for 21 key historical buildings
- Creation of interactive educational elements within the virtual environment
- Integration of archaeological and historical research data
- Development of both on-site AR experiences and remote virtual access options
