Rather than writing a 10,000 word dissertation for university, I decided to follow the Media Project module and created Novelette.
I chose this as I wanted to explore my creativity within journalism and test my skills within writing. I have been creating creative pieces (including a previous magazine for college) for years and this module was something I was immediately drawn to.
Through my enjoyment of our Feature Writing module, I knew that creating a feature based magazine was the way to go for my project.
Creating this piece allowed me to establish my writing skills that I developed within numerous modules throughout my time at Northumbria, including Writing for Digital, profile writing in Reporting Risk and Conflict and Journalism and Design.
When it came to choosing a theme for the magazine, I knew I wanted to focus on fantasy novels. I have been a huge fan of reading since I first learned how to (being born into a literature loving family definitely has its influences) and fantasy works have always kept me enthralled. I thought that merging my love for fantasy and my love for writing was the perfect idea for this project. With it lasting the entirety of the year I knew I wouldn't be bored, there was dozens of avenues that I could take my writing down, and it was also a good excuse to read more books.
In order to create Novelette, I used Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Word. InDesign was a software which I was taught during my years at college, and so I found that I was most comfortable using this to build the entire magazine. This meant I was familiar with the techniques needed to use it as well as being able to create a range of professional pieces of journalism.
Other than images which have been cited within the magazine, 100% of the work featured within the piece is my own.
