A tragic story... a Japanese girl was ki

In an incident that is the first of its kind, a Japanese child died, due to reliance on artificial intelligence, which decided that this child was safe and did not need to be taken away from her violent mother. Since 2019, the local authorities in the Japanese Prefecture of Mie have begun experimenting with a system based on artificial intelligence, whose mission is to help reach a decision regarding children who need to be transferred to temporary protective institutions away from parental violence. The artificial intelligence program relies on entering all the data of the child threatened with violence from his parents, such as the age, condition of the parents, and the nature of the parents’ circumstances, in addition to other data to assess the risks, such as “the presence of bruises on the child’s head, face, or any part of his body.” After entering all the required information, the AI system calculates the likely frequency of abuse, decides how many days are required for consultations, and whether the case calls for temporary preventive custody. After considering the assessments made by the AI, officials at the center make a final judgment on whether children should be removed from parental violence. The experiment lasted about 8 months, and it seems that the officials of this province after that considered that the assistance of artificial intelligence eases the burden on the center’s staff, and provides appropriate assessments regarding the violence that some children suffer, even from the closest people to them. Then the catastrophe happened, and the "Japan Times" (Japan Times) newspaper said: The horrible end of the life of a four-year-old girl was written simply because officials decided to resort to the opinion of this technology and struck clear indications before their eyes indicating a reality different from the ruling reached by "artificial intelligence". According to the newspaper, the artificial intelligence system in 2022 recommended that the girl not be placed under temporary alternative care, which caused her death later at the hands of her mother, according to officials in Mieh Governorate. Last June, the police arrested the mother (42 years old), accusing her of injuring her daughter with injuries that led to her death. At a press conference a week ago, Mie Prefecture Governor Katsuyuki Ichimi said, "We can't decide now whether the way the AI system was used for decision-making is 100 percent appropriate," the governor added, noting that a panel of outside experts will review the case.
