A human from the Philippine Supreme Court has prevented Congress from declaring Ferdinand Marcos Jr. the next president, claiming that he lied when he said he had not been convicted of any crime.
The Election Commission had twice rejected the petition and six other similar complaints to have Marcus Jr.'s nomination papers rescinded prior to the May 9 vote. Prosecutors took the case to the highest court on Monday, saying Marcus Jr. was convicted of tax evasion, which should have prevented him permanently from seeking public office.
Most of the petitioners are leaders of groups representing survivors of martial law in the 1970s under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the father of the presumed future president. They want the court to temporarily block the Senate and House of Representatives from conducting an official vote survey starting next week that will eventually declare Marcus Jr. the winner.
"Our petition indicates that a candidate's imminent victory cannot remedy his disqualification," said Fides Lim, a spokeswoman for a human rights group.
"If the Supreme Court allows such a shameless lie to trump the rule of law, all objective eligibility requirements in all future elections can be circumvented by disqualified candidates who happen to be victorious," she said.
Marcos Jr. garnered more than 31 million votes in an unofficial count in what is expected to be one of the strongest majority mandates for a Philippine president in decades. His running mate for vice president and the outgoing populist leader's daughter, Sarah Duterte, also appeared to have won by a large margin.
