Toyota plans to halt sales of the Camry in the Japanese market, focusing on countries where the 43-year-old flagship model is still popular, the Nikkei newspaper reported Thursday.

And Toyota notified the Japanese agents that it will stop producing the Camry for local customers at the end of this year, and that production will continue for export only.

Domestic sales will end in phases, and Toyota has already stopped taking most new orders. The new Camry models under development will be sold exclusively to overseas markets.

The car is mainly manufactured in the United States, China and Japan, and like the Corolla, the Camry is an important vehicle for the company, and the name Camry comes from the Japanese word for "crown".

Toyota has sold about 1.3 million Camrys in Japan since its debut in 1980. The sedan sells domestically for between 3.49 million yen and 4.68 million yen ($26,400 to $35,450).

The Camry is sold in more than 100 countries, and more than 21 million vehicles have been purchased through the end of 2022, according to data from Toyota.

The Camry is particularly popular in the United States, where more than 13 million vehicles have been sold.

Total global sales of the sedan last year were about 600,000, but in Japan fewer than 6,000 Camrys were sold on the market last year, according to the paper.
