After Effects Animator/Designer

$30/hr Starting at $300

My television graphics career started over 30 years ago creating print ads, billboards, and camera cards for WIVB-TV, the CBS affiliate in Western New York. As the station's Art Director, I became an unwitting pioneer when I recommended the purchase of a Mac Quadra 950, along with Photoshop 2.0 (for a cost of approximately $5,000) because purchasing a quarter million dollar Quantel Paintbox was not a viable option for a station of our size. A few months later we purchased one of the first copies of (then) CoSA After Effects. As proprietary software and hardware was cost prohibitive, we became the first station in the country to base our graphics and animations solely on a Mac platform using off-the-shelf software. This platform and software has since revolutionized our industry and has become the standard at news organizations of all sizes. Thirty years later, I am still learning and am obsessed with being on the cutting edge and staying ahead of the ever-moving curve. Both in my capacity as Art Director at WIVB-TV, and for my freelance business, Pause for Effect, which I started in 1998, I have earned dozens of national and international awards for design excellence including 4 Broadcast Design International Awards (including Gold) and two New York Emmy Awards. Since 2000, I have served as an Adjunct Professor teaching Motion Graphics at the State University of New York at Buffalo, which I enjoy tremendously because it is a thrill to get students excited about this fascinating and ever-changing industry. Specialties: Adobe Photoshop & After Effects (since it was CoSA After Effects). Overall knowledge of desktop environment in the broadcast realm; complete station look, and graphics pipeline; integrating with Final Cut, Avid Newscutter and Chyron. Oh yeah, I'm also an illustrator.
