During my two years of full time consulting, one the fields I covered multiple times was stock trading. To name the two most recent stock trading contracts: a) For several months I worked directly with a hedge fund manager to automate and refine his market neutral trading algorithm. The programming was mainly done in MATLAB and relied on Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation (TWS) to execute trades, the back testing was done using historical trade data records of hourly and daily trade data retrieved automatically by the program from multiple online sources. b) For a few months I worked on a contract which used neural networks to classify a stock based on it's performance on several time windows to give intelligent stop-loss order recommendations. I like the field, and genuinely look forward to bringing more intelligent stock trading solutions to fruition.
