Biden's press secretary Jen Psaki will

$30/hr Starting at $30

Outgoing White House press secretary Jen Psaki is set to join the NBC News Group family as early as September, according to two sources close to the situation.

While it's been widely reported that Psaki has held talks to join the news outlet, she has yet to sign a contract — for ethics and conflict reasons, that step will have to wait until after she leaves the Biden Administration this coming Friday, May 13.

Psaki's successor is Karine Jean-Pierre, who was a familiar presence on cable news channel MSNBC as a political analyst before joining the Biden campaign and then the administration. Jean-Pierre will be the first ever Black and openly gay person to serve in the role.

Psaki is set to have a few months' break between the White House and her new TV role, which is a global position that has her appearing on NBC News programs as well as on MSNBC and the company's streaming service Peacock. Psaki previously served as communications director for President Obama and was contributor with CNN from early 2017 until she joined the Biden-Harris transition team in late 2020.

Psaki is expected to contribute her expertise on the midterm elections in November and will join former White House colleague Symone Sanders at NBC News. Sanders was formerly chief spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris and debuted her own weekend show May 7 on MSNBC.

Two sources familiar with talks said Psaki is expected to ease into a role as a commentator before either she or NBC News Group consider her to anchor any show. If successful over time, Psaki is a recognizable face and might be a potential candidate to fill the slot vacated by popular 9 PM host Rachel Maddow, who is planning to reduce her time on air to pursue long-form projects for NBCUniversal.

NBC News declined comment. Psaki was not immediately reachable for comment.
