Dr. Jagannath Majhi obtained his M.A (Sociology) from Pondicherry University (2001), M.
Phil (2003) and Ph. D from University of Hyderabad (2015). He has qualified for National
Eligibility Test in Sociology (2006) (University Grant Commission) India. Mr. Majhi has
more than one decade, research experience in various tribal groups in Odisha, India.
Currently he is involved in Mother-Tongue Survey of India, Publications of District Census
Handbooks of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States (23 Volumes, Part-A and Part-B),
National Population Register (NPR), Socio-economic Caste Census (SECC) and other major
projects of the Government of India.
Presently he is working as Deputy Director, Directorate of Census Operations,
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. Of India. Mr. Majhi also
supervised for the preparation and publication of District Census Handbooks (70 Volumes)
for 70 districts at Directorate of Census Operations, Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow during 2007-
2010. He also supervised and monitored DCHB work at Directorate of Census Operations
Odisha, Bhubaneswar for the preparation and publications of (30 volumes) for 30 districts
during 2010-2013.
His areas of interest are: Sociology of Health, Tribal Health Culture Studies,
Indigenous Knowledge and Management, Community Health and Development, NGOs and
Tribal Development, Ethnography and Qualitative Research.
He has rendered his services in diverse capacities like, Field Investigator, Research
Assistant, District Co-ordinator, Assistant Director and Deputy Director in Government
Departments and various Universities and Research Organizations.
He has published a quite number of articles contributing in the area of ethnomedicine,
health culture, religious and ritual life of the Kandhas and kinship system in various national
and international refereed journals and edited books as chapters. He has also presented his
research papers in various National and International Seminars, Workshops and Conferences.
Mr. Majhi has qualified for Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR)
Doctoral Fellowship (2005), New Delhi; Recipient of ‘Universities with Potential for
Excellence’ (UPE/UGC) Doctoral Fellowship (2004-2007), University of Hyderabad. He has
received an ANTHRA Research Fellowship (2004), Sainikpuri, Secunderabad and Merit-
Cum Means Scholarship, University of Hyderabad.
