clashes broke out for the fourth day in several swedish cities, triggered by what appears to be the burning of copies of the qur'an by a far-right anti-immigration group.

local media said three people were injured in the eastern city of norchoping on sunday when police fired warning shots at rioters.

several cars caught fire and at least 17 people were arrested.

cars, including a bus, were set on fire on saturday in the southern city of malmö during a far-right march.

earlier, iran summoned the swedish envoy to protest.the iraqi foreign ministry also summoned the swedish charge d'affaires in baghdad on sunday, warning that the issue could have "serious implications" for relations between sweden and muslim communities in general.

Danish-Swedish extremist Rasmus Palodan, who leads the stram Kurs movement, or hard line, said he had burned the most sacred Islamic text and would repeat it.

at least 16 police officers were reportedly injured and several police cars destroyed in disturbances on thursday, friday and saturday at places where members of the far-right group had gathered, including on the outskirts of stockholm and in the cities of Linc hoping and norchoping.

the head of the swedish national police, anders thornberg, said the demonstrators showed indifference to the lives of police officers, adding, "we have seen violent riots before. but that's something else."

anger over the far-right group's actions -- which included burning a copy of the koran on thursday and planning to do so again at other rallies -- also spread outside sweden's borders.

the iraqi foreign ministry summoned the swedish charge d'affaires in baghdad on sunday, warning that the issue could have "serious implications" for relations between sweden and muslim communities in general.

protests against plans by the sturm kush movement to burn the qur'an have turned violent in sweden before. in 2020, protesters set cars on fire and storefronts were damaged in clashes in malmö.

balodan , who was jailed for one month in 2020 for crimes including racism in denmark, tried to plan a similar burning of the qur'an in other european countries, including france and belgium.

balodan heads denmark's far-right ultra-line party of sturm kush, and was convicted nearly two years ago of posting anti-islamic videos on his party's social media.

he faced 14 charges, including racism, defamation and dangerous driving.

balodan, 40, was dismissed for three years as a criminal lawyer and banned from driving for a year.

his party was unable to enter the danish parliament in the 2019 national elections, winning 1.8% of the vote, just below the 2% threshold needed to enter parliament.

balodan insists that he supports denmark's tradition of freedom of expression.
