The Israeli army is conducting a vast operation in the occupied territories. Over the past year, 185 Palestinians have been killed. Such a death toll has not been seen since the second Intifada.
There have been 20 deaths, almost one a day, this January. In total, 185 Palestinians have been killed by the army or by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank over the past year, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. This violence has reached a level not seen since the end of the Second Intifada (2000-2005).
"Operation Break the Wave" was launched by the Army in the spring of 2022, after several attacks against civilians in Israel. It initially aimed to break a new Palestinian armed resistance. Fighters have grouped in two movements, the Brigades in Jenin and the Lions in Nablus, and they inspire more solitary wolves elsewhere. They are young and well-armed, and span the different political parties. They engage in confrontation, attacking soldiers and settlers in the West Bank, civilians in Israel. Thirty Israelis have been killed in this way. In their shadow, a movement is rising: the Islamic Jihad, an Islamist group that wants to bring people together but does not aspire to power.
