Classic Session Drum Tracks

$40/hr Starting at $40

I'm a guitarist by trade but I'm also a serious nerd for the sound of classic 1970s era studio drums, both in terms of the musical vocabulary/rhythmic feels and in the aesthetic of the recording gear and techniques from that era.  If you're looking for this kind of drum sound and approach for a song you're working on, allow me to be your virtual Steve Gadd.  I've studied the core rhythms and rudiments at the heart of his playing for years and have actually trained myself to play these beats and fills single-handed on a Launchpad.  This includes his approach to linear drumming, Latin beats, jazz drumming, his three and four-limb drum fills, etc.

I have a drummer friend who collects vintage drums, cymbals, hardware, mics and pre-amps.  I had him provide me recordings of a wide range of dynamic hits on each of his drums (first with no muting and then muted with towels) and each of his cymbals and hi-hat.  He also recorded a small library of snare drum rolls for me.  I took this these two libraries of drum sounds (with towels and without) and created playable software drum kits that I've become quite adept at playing on the Launchpad.  My typical approach to providing these classic session drum tracks for people is to play a couple live takes in my DAW, select the best sections from each and do some minimal note edits wherever a rhythmic anomaly may have occurred.  Nothing is quantized which allows for things like a consistently early snare, or a hi-hat that swings closer to a 5 to 4 ratio.  This process is pretty speedy in most cases. The results are some very human sounding drum tracks with that classic session drummer aesthetic and musical sensibility.
