I hope you have a .stl or .obj file which you would like to get converted into CAD supportive file so that other operation can be done, as like CNC machining.
Basically STL (an abbreviation of "stereolithography") is a 3d file format which are made with so may triangles. This file is only supported for 3d printing and it is not mechanical cad format friendly. The primarily scanned file is also in .stl/.obj format.
And .Step (.stp) file is made with clear surface and has very less faces to work with. It is also an universal file format supported by almost all of the CAD software.
After working with so many clients over years, I have found a way out to convert the .stl file to .step or .iges format.
However, not all the files can be converted successfully and totally depends of the file complexity and number of faces. There might also be upto 2-4% data loss depending on geometry type.
