ELECTROLYTES
Our body fluid consists of water and electrolytes. Electrolytes are ions, the electrically charged particles, carry the electrical energy and help in performing bodily functions such as muscular contraction and relaxation, nerve impulse transmission, etc. Most important electrolytes in human body fluid are Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Chloride and Phosphate.
Sources of these electrolytes are as follows:
•Sodium: Table salt, spinach, beets, carrot, sweet potato, tomato
•Potassium: Avocado, banana, pumpkin, yoghurt, potato
•Magnesium: Cereals, grains, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables
•Calcium: Dairy products (milk, yoghurt, buttermilk and cheese), almond, orange
•Chloride: Table salt, tomato
•Phosphate: Milk, meat, whole grains
Balancing electrolyte is not an easy task. Major symptoms of electrolyte imbalance (high or low) are as follows:
•irregular heartbeat
•change in blood pressure
•bone disorder
•nervous system disorder
•excessive tiredness
•numbness
If any individuals who experience any of the above-said symptoms, just a blood test can tell which electrolyte is in excess and which one is insufficient. Accumulation of excessive electrolytes could be balanced by drinking plain water than required amount or higher than the normal. This results in causing increased urine passing where excessive electrolytes could be washed off. Specific drugs are there for specific electrolyte wash off.
Sometimes the electrolytes are low in the body fluid, due to continuous loss of water from the body in forms such as urine, sweat, vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. To re-dehydrate, we can depend on natural supplements. Natural sources of the particular electrolyte, as said above, when added to the die can help in electrolyte replenishment.
Thank you!
