A good system starts with a well designed database. I have been a freelance DBA for some companies for more than 7 years. Good database structures, knowing and understanding server requirements, resource requirements, and also streamlining it for software use, e.g. Web API's, Client / Server apps / MVC Applications and Web Applications.
Nothing beats experience.
