OpenAI disabled Bing's browsing feature in ChatGPT after some users discovered it could be used to bypass paywalls, which news publications often use to encourage readers to sign up for a paid subscription. Browsing with Bing was only available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, the premium class of OpenAI's popular chatbots. OpenAI said in a tweet: "We have learned that ChatGPT 'browse' beta can sometimes display content in ways we don't want, for example, if a user specifically requests the full text of a URL, it may inadvertently fulfill that request and we're disabling browsing." While we fix that - we want to get it right by the content owners as reported by digitartlend. In a subsequent tweet, OpenAI said it was "very grateful to our ChatGPT Plus subscribers who helped us test the browsing feature," adding: "This is why we started with a beta version - we got very valuable feedback, and learned a lot." The Microsoft-backed company said it will relaunch the feature "soon." In response to this issue, OpenAI has also changed its FAQ page to let Plus subscribers know what's going on. The updated page says: We disabled Browse with Bing beta out of an abundance of caution while fixing this for the content owners to do the right thing, “We are working to get the beta back up ASAP, and appreciate your understanding!” As its name suggests, Browsing with Bing is an integration with Microsoft's search engine and enables ChatGPT Plus users to pull recent information instead of the old web-based data on which the chatbot was trained, going back to September 2021. When the feature returns, those using OpenAI's ChatGPT app on iPhone can turn it on by enabling browsing in the "New features" section of the app's settings. Next, select GPT-4 in the form converter and then choose "Browse with Bing" in the drop-down menu. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month for benefits such as seamless access to ChatGPT during busy times, faster response times, and priority access to new features and improvements.
