Film Editor

$15/hr Starting at $25

I most recently worked as an assistant editor for Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, a filmmaker whose work has been broadcast on PBS and screened at festivals such as Sundance. Her film on female body doubles dealt with a plethora of materials, including archival, interview, and reenactment content. Managing the various codecs, aspect ratios, and qualities of materials was a daunting task, but one I enjoyed approaching. Because her film organized itself along patterned lines (i.e. films that used pans up and down naked bodies), I was able to flex my creative muscles in creating patterns of material to add to the interrogative practice of the film. For me, it is a joy to comb through as many materials as possible to support film work; the best concepts, and deepest analyses, are built in the editorial phase. In my own practice as a filmmaker, I have worked at every stage of production, from story development through delivering final projects. I am particularly skilled in Premiere and Avid, having edited all of my projects at UCLA within these two softwares. I have directed and edited multiple films during my time at UCLA, which have taught me how to handle the unpredictability of post-production technical and professional calm. My first documentary, following Men’s Rights Activists in Southern California, took a year of shooting with multiple characters to create a story arc. Building and developing the stories with my characters was a challenge: humanizing and condescing the materials into a cohesive whole was all built in the edit room. My second project, Free Fall, is an examination of childhood through the lens of bounce houses. The film required not only interviews and verite footage, but two days of studio shoots with created sets. My experiences a both an edit production assistant at Evolutions in London as well as an assistant editor for the in-house documentary on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for the BBC have honed my skills working for specific brands. Both Evolutions and the BBC had large creative teams, and managing their materials while using my technical expertise was a deeply rewarding experience. Working together while learning on the job allowed me the flexibility to experience larger projects while also witnessing professionals at the height of their careers.
