First Wegmans Grocery Store on Long Island Slated for Lake Grove
Supermarket chain Wegmans has announced that it will open its first Long Island store in the Village of Lake Grove, according to reports.
Long Islanders were quick to share news of the incoming grocer on social media after it broke on Monday. Reports say that Wegmans has agreed to buy 8.5 acres of the DSW Plaza Shopping Center in Lake Grove, at the corner of Middle County Road and Moriches Road. The project for the 100,000 square-foot store will require construction and is still in the early planning stages.
“For years, we’ve received hundreds of requests from residents for a Wegmans on Long Island,” said Dan Aken, director of real estate at Wegmans, in a statement to the Press. “We are very excited to bring Wegmans to Lake Grove and get to know our new community.”
Based in Rochester, N.Y., Wegmans has more than 100 locations across the East Coast, most of them in upstate New York and Pennsylvania, while others are located in New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. There is also one existing location in Brooklyn and a planned location for Manhattan in Astor Place.
Village of Lake Grove and Town of Brookhaven officials have not yet responded to requests for comment.
