Haaland faces his old club, Liverpool ar

After a weekend of no domestic British football, the Champions League returns to our screens – and there is plenty to get excited about.

The second round of fixtures in the 2022-23 group stages will take place this week and for the UK clubs it means a return to action after the weekend's fixtures were postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

No doubt, they'll look to use the rest to their advantage ahead of some intriguing midweek fixtures that includes under-pressure Liverpool coming up against free-scoring Ajax.

Manchester City's £51million summer signing Erling Haaland will face his former club Borussia Dortmund while new Chelsea boss Graham Potter will not only take charge of his first Blues game, but his first-ever Champions League fixture.

Sportsmail, takes a look at eight things to watch out for in this week's Champions League fixtures.

Troubled Bayern Munich face in-form Barcelona

Bayern Munich have endured a tricky start to the new season and have drawn their last three Bundesliga fixtures, which has left them sitting third in the league table.

Star players are reportedly questioning boss Julian Nagelsmann tactics after their latest 2-2 draw with Stuttgart. Pressure is mounting on the Bundesliga champions.

Thankfully they put their domestic form behind them as they beat Inter Milan 2-0 in their group-stage opener to get themselves off to a strong start in Europe. This will be a whole new challenge, however, against a new-look and in-form Barcelona.

The sides met last season in the Champions League, when Bayern won both group-stage matches 3-0. In 2020, the German giants beat Barcelona 8-2 in the quarter-finals.

It could be different this time round, with the Spanish giants remaining unbeaten in LaLiga, and also now having Bayern's former star man Robert Lewandowski in their own front line.

Liverpool need to bounce back against free-scoring Ajax

Liverpool are under pressure to start living up to recent standards under Jurgen Klopp after an indifferent start to the season.

The Reds have had a mixed campaign in the Premier League so far and have plenty of injuries - therefore the weekend's break may have helped them freshen up the squad.

All eyes will be on Jurgen Klopp's side who desperately need a win in Europe after being humiliated with a huge 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the group-stage opener.

It will not be easy, as Dutch champions Ajax, despite yet another summer of selling stars are in fine-form.

New Ajax boss Alfred Schreude and his side pulled off a 4-0 thrashing of Rangers in their opening fixture and have been free-scoring in the Eredivisie. They beat SC Heerenveen 5-0 on the weekend.
