Barcelona president Joan Laporta praised the sportsmanship of his rival Real Madrid after losing the Spanish Super Cup.
Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup for the 14th time in its history, by defeating Real Madrid in the final at King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh on Sunday evening.
Laporta said after the match: "Real Madrid is a great club, they know how to win and they know how to lose. They were very classy, and Florentino spoke very well with Busquets."
He added, "It is the first title that Xavi achieved with us as a coach. This is a success for all Barcelona fans, and for the players in particular. Our coach is wonderful."
He continued, "Javi scored a great goal and scored two goals. He deserves to win the MVP award, but the whole team also played exceptionally well, especially Pedri and Busquets. We don't need to name the entire team, because we have Xavi, he's a great coach."
He pointed out: "It is a distinguished and important title. I congratulate the Spanish Federation for organizing this Super Cup in a distinguished way. We all felt proud."
And he concluded: “I am confident that Xavi will achieve more titles. He has the capabilities and personality, and he possesses a clear and distinctive style. We knew how to bear because we have been suffering for a year and a half, and today we celebrate a title.”
Barcelona advanced by three goals during the match, through Javi, Robert Lewandowski and Pedri, before Karim Benzema scored Real Madrid's only goal.
Barcelona had defeated Real Betis in the semi-finals on penalty kicks.
Barcelona won the first title under the leadership of Xavi Hernandez, who took over the job more than a year ago.
