Carlo Ancelotti has given the ‘green light’ to bring Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani to Real Madrid, according to reports.
The Uruguayan has struggled for game time this season due to injuries. He signed a one-year contract last summer after a successful maiden campaign at Old Trafford.
As well as Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are expected to leave on free transfers in the summer.
He has been linked with a move back to South America. However, Real Madrid have emerged as a potential landing point for the veteran striker.
This is according to Fichajes (via Sport Witness), who claim that Cavani is Ancelotti’s ‘Plan B’ should Los Blancos fail to sign number one target Erling Haaland.
The Man Utd man would have to ‘accept a role’ as a bench player behind Karim Benzema – who has 39 goals in as many games this season.
Real Madrid are now ‘evaluating’ the possibility of making an ‘interesting offer’ for Cavani as an ideal short-term backup option up top.
All of this will be thrown out the window should Madrid bring in Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, however.
The Norwegian striker has also been heavily linked with a move to Man Utd, Man City, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Bayern have reportedly ruled themselves out of the running, meanwhile, City are increasingly confident of winning the race to sign the in-demand forward.
Haaland will be available for around £63m in the summer transfer window when a release clause becomes active.
This is seen as a huge steal for a player who has scored 82 goals in 85 games for Dortmund, 29 in 27 for RB Salzburg and 15 in 17 for Norway.
