I charge $40 for every 5,000 words in a manuscript, and consider anything 5K words or more a manuscript. That way you know exactly what your cost will be before hiring me. Shorter works, magazine articles and stories, or documents, are charged at $30 an hour. I have examples of editing in both fiction and nonfiction to send you after you contact me here.
I leave lots of notes in the margins to explain why I do certain things so you’ll know in the future. I prefer to edit edit only in Word files, using Track Changes, but can provide edited copy for PDFs. You get a much more comprehensive edit in Word, because of the Track Changes function. It allows you to see each individual change, additions in one color and deletions in the other, before you approve the document or manuscript. After you go through the marked-up version and I make whatever changes you ask for, I send you a black copy. At this point, the spacing, punctuation, and spelling are checked as well as final wording.
You can figure the price by your word count before you send it. For example, if your manuscript is 10,000 words, 5,000 goes into 10,000 twice, so it’s 2 X $50= $100. If your manuscript is 80,000 words, 80,000 divided by 5,000 = 16. So `16 X $50=$800. I ask for half down into Guru SafePay and the balance at completion. We’ll have that in writing in our Guru agreement before we start, so no one is ever disappointed.
