My main skill base is well described as a prototype engineer for products that contain optical, optoelectronic, electronic, embedded software and mechanical components. 50% of my experience was gained whilst working on research projects in academic environments (King's College London, Vrije Universiteit Brussels and Cambridge University) and 50% whilst working in start-up companies in Cambridge science park. I have designed optical cross-connects for fibre-to-fibre switches, packet switches (Ph.D on optically assisted switching and processing architectures), digital and electronic circuits including FPGAs, laser communication systems (knowledge of laser safety, scintillation design issues and electronic receiver circuits). Skill base is relevant to LIDAR system development, spectroscopy, plus general optical/optoelectronic/electronic systems development.
