I believe that stories come alive in revision. These days, agents and editors want to see polished manuscripts. Let me apply expert editing skills to your project, which I developed from the oldest and most prestigious MFA in Creative Writing for Children program—Vermont College of Fine Arts. In addition, I hold a BA in English from California State University, Long Beach. Over the years, I have critiqued several writers’ manuscripts that led to representation at top-tier literary agencies and contracts with prominent publishers. My own work is represented by the Andrea Brown Literary Agency. Over the past fifteen years, I have written and edited middle grade and young adult novels, novellas, short stories, and plays, and have experience in realistic, high fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal fiction, science fiction, mystery, and romance genres. I also have expertise in business writing, including writing and editing content for websites, corporate profiles, brochures, resumes, media releases and curricula vitae. Currently, I am Managing Editor of the Construction Defect Journal. For big picture or macro editing, I analyze structure, plot, dialogue and narrative (broadly), setting, theme, and character arcs. I provide constructive feedback by pointing out what is working well and what areas need revision. For line editing (micro level), I focus on sentence structure, word choice, authorial intrusion (show don’t tell), clichés, grammar, symbolism, metaphors, dialogue and narrative (specifically) and consistency. Fantasy and Science Fiction genres have special needs that need to be addressed, such as world building and magical rules. In addition to editing, I am also interested in contract creative or corporate writing projects for children or adult readers. Contact me if you want to be successful at what you do.
