Richard Tilak Kipchumba is an independent consultant in Nairobi, Kenya. He advises clients on accounting, finance, tax obligations, internal controls, debt and other aspects of business. He has been an independent consultant for the past three years. Over this time, he has gained immense insight in business management. Prior to this, he worked as a finance manager for a motor vehicle dealership which he co-owned with a friend for 6 years. As a finance manager, he was responsible for day to day financial and administrative aspect of the partnership. He was instrumental in the growing of the business share capital by 500% over the period. Mr. Kipchumba also worked as a risk analyst with Faulu Kenya DTM Ltd, a leading micro finance institution based in Nairobi, Kenya where he helped the institution put up a robust risk mitigation policy that ensured that the micro finance loans portfolio was not exposed to inherent risks. During his tenure at the institution, the portfolio at risk (PAR) declined from a high of 70% to a manageable level of 7%. He pioneered the risk department, put the policy in place and exited after two and half years. The experience at Faulu Kenya DTM Ltd, was key in the research paper he authored titled “Major Risks in Micro Finance Institution in Kenya. A case study of Faulu Kenya DTM Ltd.’’ KCB Bank Kenya Ltd, the biggest and the leading commercial bank in the region is where Richard spend a significant part of his early life working as a bank officer in all the major departments of the bank. He worked as a customer service officer, teller, credit officer, clearing officer and personal / business banker. All these engagements exposed him to gain vast experience in banking operations, credit operations and corporate financing.
