"No nuclear or cold war"... Russian welcome and Ukrainian acceptance of the Chinese peace initiative (report)

A year after the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Chinese president launched the "global security" initiative to end the conflict and contribute to the settlement in Ukraine by peaceful means.

Provisions of the Chinese peace initiative

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a paper containing Beijing's position on the political solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, which included several principles as follows:

- Gradual de-escalation by stopping the fighting, leading to a comprehensive and final ceasefire.

- Dialogue and negotiation to resolve the Russian crisis in Ukraine.

- Rejection of the cold war mentality and respect for the sovereignty of all countries.

Avoiding any nuclear crisis, preserving the safety of nuclear power plants, and preventing attacks on any nuclear facilities.

Opposing the development and use of biological and chemical weapons by any country.

Opposition to any unilateral sanctions by the Security Council.

Launching peace negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian sides, resolving the humanitarian crisis, and protecting prisoners and civilians.

Russia welcomes the peace plan

Yesterday, Friday, Moscow welcomed China's initiative to settle the conflict in Ukraine peacefully, and the Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement today, reported by the Russian "Novosti" agency, expressed its support for the sincere Chinese initiative to contribute to the settlement in Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said: “We share Beijing's proposal for a settlement, and we are committed to respecting the United Nations Charter, international and humanitarian law, and comprehensive security.

In its statement, the Foreign Ministry affirmed that Moscow is open to achieving the goals of the military operation in Ukraine through political and diplomatic means.

Ukraine accepts.. but

For its part, Ukraine announced its approval of the Chinese initiative, but "in part", on some items of the Chinese proposal for a cease-fire, and expressed reservations on other parts.

And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, during a press conference held on Friday in Kiev, that he welcomes some elements of the Chinese proposal for a ceasefire, saying: “Why not, the country in which the war is taking place should launch the peace plan.”

The Ukrainian president added, "China did not present a real plan, but some ideas, and there are some parts that we do not agree with."

He also confirmed his intention to hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, after Beijing submitted proposals to settle the dispute.
