Jared Trainor was surfing solo at Centerville Beach on Sunday in Humboldt County when the shark emerged knocking him off his surfboard

Trainor was dragged underwater by the shark and miraculously survived after grabbing the shark's body with one hand and kicking it with his  uninjured leg

A 31-year-old man survived a gruesome shark attack on a California beach when he kicked the great white in the head after the beast chomped on his surfboard and then his right leg, leaving him with massive injuries. 

Jared Trainor was surfing solo on Centerville Beach on Sunday located in Northern California's Humboldt County, a nine-mile stretch of pristine beach along the Pacific situated between cliffs and dairy farms, when the shark emerged knocking him off his surfboard, The Times-Standard newspaper in Humboldt reported. 

Trainor, a serious and experienced surfer, was dragged underwater by the shark began was feasting on his right leg.                                                                                                                                                       

The avid surfer said he was able to set himself free by grabbing the shark's body with one hand and kicking the shark with his uninjured leg until the beast let him go and swam away.

The quick-thinking action saved Trainor's life but not without serious injury. 

During the harrowing ordeal, Trainor sustained gnarly wounds to his right leg and thigh, spanning nearly 19 inches long and as long as the jaws of the great white, that he said surgeons had to staple shut, the news outlet reported.                                                                                                                                                                    Trainor miraculously was able to get to the beach where he was able to call for help from a fellow surfer's cell phone.                        

Though he wasn't able to recall the 'initial contact,' saying 'it happened so quickly.' Trainor said, 'I'm grateful to be alive,' the Times-Standard newspaper reported.

He added: 'I love surfing so much that I'm hoping this brings a newfound appreciation.'

Haley Martino, Trainor's sister, created a GoFundMe to help raise money for her brother's medical expenses.

He suffered several wounds to the thigh but is lucky to be alive,' she wrote. 

'He recently just got married to his wife Desiray last July and they could use all the help they can get with medical expenses as this will be a long recovery!'            Martino said that her brother is home now recovering, saying in part, 'he's in pain but in good spirits!'
