Sometimes exact solutions to mathematical problems are not possible or, at least, may be very difficult to obtain. In such cases, an approximation to the exact solution may be adequate or even necessary. Numerical methods provide techniques for finding approximate solutions to otherwise difficult or impossible exact problem solutions. An overly simplified way of describing numerical methods is to say that they are systematized trial-and-error methods for finding an approximate solution to an otherwise insoluble problem.
