Ukraine is seeking to obtain Western tanks, specifically German-designed Leopard 2s, from the meeting of the fifty countries that support it held on January 20th in Ramstein, Germany. The United Kingdom and France have already promised to deliver 14 Challenger 2s and AMX-10RCs respectively, but for the transfer of Leopard 2s to take place, the agreement of the German government is required. However, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, does not wish to give it at the moment. According to German government sources, Germany could only accept the delivery of Leopard 2s to Ukraine if the United States do the same with their M1 Abrams tanks. However, American defense officials believe that the Ukrainian army would not have the capacity to implement Abrams tanks and prefer to emphasize artillery and infantry fighting vehicles. The Ramstein meeting was an opportunity to move the lines but no agreement was reached on the delivery of tanks to the Ukrainian army. Poland is getting impatient and is considering doing without German authorization to sell its Leopard 2s to Ukraine.
