Porsche plans to have an electric Paname

$15/hr Starting at $25

Spy footage has revealed that Porsche is planning a series of updates for the Panamera, but the future may have something bigger in store for the sporty throwback.

A new report from Autocar claims that an electric version is in the works on the same SSP platform that will power the seven-seat SUV that Zuffenhausen recently announced.

According to Motor One, a dedicated EV platform will also be put to good use for the second-generation Taycan coming later this decade.

It is believed that the Panamera without a combustion engine would fit over the Taycan by having a larger body with an extended wheelbase.

The British magazine claims it will be similar in size to the extended model available today, which extends at 5199 mm (204.7 in) and measures 3,100 mm (122 in) between the axles.

And by riding on a dedicated electric car platform, it means that the space available inside will be better than that of the petrol-powered Panamera LWB.

The so-called Panamera EV is said to be in the early stages of development and therefore unlikely to come out before the middle of the decade when the big SUV is slated to hit the streets.

The next Taycan is customized for the 2027 version, and according to Autocar, Porsche is said to be working on more advanced 800-volt battery technology with greater power density to achieve greater range while single- and dual-motor derivatives are in the near future.

The electric Panamera will not signal the end of combustion engines, as Porsche plans to improve the ICE-powered model in 2023 and keep it in production until the end of the decade.

That will translate into overlap for a few years, which will also be the case with the Macan.

While the sports crossover will get an EV variant next year, which will be sold alongside gas derivatives for a while.

The larger Cayenne will likely follow a similar strategy, with Autocar stating that it will have a zero-emission flavor in 2025.

The only Porsche that won't get a purely electric motor in the near future will be the 911 as the German brand has ruled out an EV model this decade.

Meanwhile, the hybrid powertrain comes by the middle of the decade when the smaller 718 sports cars will drop ICEs altogether.
