Russia has announced a power outage again at the Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine, in an accident whose repercussions could be serious and has become recurrent in conjunction with bombing and battles.

A Russian-appointed official in the part of Ukraine's Zaporizhia region it controls said Monday that the Zaporizhya nuclear power plant had gone into standby mode and was running emergency electricity generators.

Vladimir Rogov added that the station was "completely" disconnected from any external electricity supply after Ukraine disconnected the electric power line it controls.

Anatoly Kortev, Secretary of the Zaporizhia City Council in Ukraine, said that work has been underway since the early hours of Monday morning to restore electric power to the city.

He continued, saying that the electric power "was partially cut off in Zaporizhia due to an emergency situation at one of the power facilities."

In recent weeks, Russian forces have beefed up their defensive positions at and around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the south of the country, ahead of an expected counterattack in the region.

Russian forces have had firing positions over some of the nuclear plant buildings for months.
