June 30, 2018 Hello, I am writing to apply for work as a proofreader or copy editor. My undergraduate degree from Cornell is in English, and I’ve followed that with an MFA and PhD in Theatre. I lived on Taiwan for three years, and during that time helped improve the papers of many graduate students, in both scientific and literary fields. For seventeen years I was a professor, and my Introduction to Theatre course included a substantial writing component. Many students told me that they had learned more about careful writing in that course than in their actual English courses, which pleased me greatly. In 2010, without formal training, I served as copy editor for a friend of mine, Dr. Frederick Barken, MD. His book Out of Practice came out the following year, and he reported to me that the publisher’s in-house copy editor had found very little to correct. I subsequently enrolled in and passed the Copyediting [sic] course given online by the University of California at San Diego, and received my certificate of completion last year. That course used Amy Einsohn’s Copyeditor’s Handbook, so I am confident I have a solid foundation in the basics of the craft. This supplements my strong and long-standing passion for correct English usage. I hope I may be of service to you, and I thank you for considering my application. Dave Williams
