Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has announced her resignation as chairman of the country's ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

This followed the party’s loss of the last local elections.

Tsai Iming said she took responsibility for the party’s meager results in the local elections.

“The election results did not come as we expected,” Tsai told reporters. I take all responsibility and immediately resign from the DPP presidency.”

Tsai will remain president of the autonomous island.

Taiwan’s main opposition party, Kuomintang, won Saturday’s election in a setback for President Tsai Ing-wen, who portrayed the local election as challenging China.
