Christiane Hoffmann, a spokeswoman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, said on Monday that he had accepted the resignation of German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and would appoint her replacement.

"The chancellor has accepted Lambrecht's resignation and will appoint a new candidate at the appropriate time," Christiane Hoffmann told a daily press briefing in Berlin.

She stated that "Schulz respects Christine Lambrecht's decision to step down from her post, and is grateful for her time in service."

In a related context, a spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense, Christian Thiels, told reporters that Christine Lambrecht will continue to carry out her duties until a successor is found, and that she will supervise a meeting that will be held next Friday for NATO allies at Ramstein Air Base.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported, quoting a source in the German government, that Christine Lambrecht's successor is expected to be announced on Tuesday.
