Russia launches 'massive missile strike'

Russian missiles struck a port in southern Ukraine just days after an airstrike targeted a different Ukrainian Black Sea port, according to a regional official.

Port infrastructure in Ukraine's southern Mykolaiv region was hit by Russian forces on Tuesday, according to the city's mayor. Russia struck another port in the town of Odesa on Saturday, just hours after the warring nations signed a dealallowing for safe passage of ships carrying agricultural exports.

"A massive missile strike was launched on the south of Ukraine from the direction of the Black Sea, and with the use of aviation," Mayor Oleksandr Senkevich told Ukrainian state television, according to Reuters.

There are no reports of injuries, and Senkevich did not elaborate on the damage done by the reported missile strikes.

Russian Kalibr cruise missiles hit a port in Odesa on Saturday in an attack that outraged Ukrainian and Western officials. 

Ukraine and Russia agreed to a deal on Friday to resume grain exports from the Black Sea port of Odesa. The agreement to end the port standoff raised hope that a global food crisis could be averted. 

Ukraine, the world’s largest exporter of sunflower oil, fourth largest of corn, and fifth largest of wheat, has been unable to ship agricultural products since Russia's Feb. 24 invasion because of a Russian blockade of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

The United States said the attack on Saturday raised “serious doubts” on Russia’scommitment to the deal.

Russia has laid blame on Ukraine for the shutdown of the ports, claiming Ukrainian mines in the port waters have been delaying agricultural shipments.
