Officials said at least six people were killed and dozens wounded in a Russian raid on a residential area in the city of Kharkiv.

The death toll from a Russian attack on an apartment building in the Donetsk region has risen to at least 29, according to emergency services.

Both sides of the conflict reported fighting north of Slovinsk, while Ukraine claims to have made progress against Russian forces in the south of the country.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken criticized China for supporting Russia after he met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for more than five hours on Saturday.

The French and German economy ministers fear extending Russian gas supply cuts with the shutdown of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Monday for 10 days.

While maintenance work was scheduled in advance, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a statement on Monday that Europe "will not be divided by Russia's actions," as the pipeline shutdown tests Europe's resolve to distance itself from Russian fuel supplies.

On Sunday, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire warned that France must act quickly and efficiently to prepare for a "total cut of Russian gas," and urged attendees at an economic conference in Aix-en-Provence, southern France, to "be creative." and “stop spending two or three years doing what other countries are doing in six months.”

He added that France should speed up the construction of a floating natural gas station off the Atlantic coast in the west and build more new nuclear reactors.

It's "just a situation we've never seen before" and "anything can happen," Habeck told public radio station Deutschlandfunk on Saturday.

“The gas can flow again, even more than before. Nothing can come at all. And frankly we always have to prepare for the worst, and do a little bit for the better.”

On June 23, Germany activated the second phase of its three-stage gas emergency program, taking it one step closer to rationing supplies to industries, as Europe's largest economy is now officially running a natural gas shortage and is escalating a crisis plan to conserve supplies. Russia is also turning off the taps.

Russia is France's second largest supplier of natural gas, providing 17% of France's imports in 2021, according to the French Ministry of Environmental Transformation.

The ministry added that, unlike its European neighbor Germany, France relies mainly on nuclear energy, which accounts for 75% of its energy production in 2020.
