To adapt a novel to a screen play takes quite a bit of work. To give you my fee lets concentrate on one 250-page novel. From there we can pro rate your other books. Often clients think that it is an easy task, let me point out briefly what the adaption consists of.
To tell your story in approx. two hours, I will need to slice and dice the novel. After reading it thoroughly (at least twice), my job is to beat out the most compelling plot points that drive the story.
While reading, I must examine the characters and subplots to accurately identify the story’s theme to help me make the difficult choices of carving out what’s important to the story (your input will always be a priority).
Cutting the story down to a manageable size often requires losing some characters as well as subplots. If they don’t affect the overall story, I must cut them. Film is a visual medium, therefore I can only write what can be seen on the screen. I must rely on dialogue to convey a character’s internal struggle, a talent I was blessed with. My experience and expertise will be to successfully speed up the storytelling, to make it more compelling for film audiences.
The adaption is the most difficult part of my job. I estimate to read 250 pages twice, whilst making edits, notes, notes
