Somalia has a parliament..

Somali analysts and deputies have expressed optimism that the new parliament's formal assumption of duties will pave the way for a breakthrough to end the political and security crises in the country.

Somalia suffered from a political electoral blockage and a conflict at the top of the pyramid of power that nearly toppled relative stability in a country recovering from the repercussions of a civil war.

The electoral process in Somalia is complex, as the district councils, with representatives from the clans, choose representatives, who in turn appoint the country's president.

Parliament elections lasted more than a year, and witnessed chaos characterized by violence and conflicts between the president and the prime minister, and others between the central government and some states of the country.

Officially, these elections began on September 29, 2021, and continued until this April.

And 307 members were elected out of the 329 that make up the parliament in its two houses of the people and the Senate, and it is expected that the election of 22 members will be completed in the coming days.

After elections that were postponed more than five times, the deputies took the constitutional oath, on April 15, and held the first parliamentary session on Monday.

"We had to face challenges and attempts to prevent us from reaching this day, but I am very happy," Prime Minister Muhammed Hussein Robley said during the swearing-in ceremony.

"I congratulate the new legislators who I hope will help the country overcome the current difficult situation," he continued.

While the country's president, Mohamed Abdullah Farmajo, described, via Twitter, this event as "historic."

The Interim Speaker of the People's Assembly, Abdel Salam Haj Ahmed, said that international pressures and the dire humanitarian situation in the country do not allow more time to be wasted.

And he added: We have to start completing the presidential elections procedures.

In February 2021, Farmajo's term expired without the ability to hold elections.

No date has yet been set for the presidential elections.
