Substantive Editing combines very heavy copy editing with applied developmental editing (which focuses on your work’s content, overall structure, organisation, and other global elements, and takes place before the copy editing stage). Whether your manuscript is fiction or nonfiction, as your developmental editor, I deliver a detailed revision plan for you to consider before you prepare your next draft. The plan includes a description of the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses and suggestions for enhancing the work. As your substantive editor, I edit your manuscript at a deeper level than occurs during copy editing: I reorganise, change sentence structure, and add more transitional copy than would be called for in a copy edit. I consult with you about the largest changes in order to be sure that you are in agreement before they are applied. I edit electronically, in Microsoft Word. I will return a clean, ready-to-use, edited manuscript and an edited red-lined manuscript with Word's track-changes displayed so that you can review each edit before you accept it. I also offer pen-and-ink editing to authors who request it.
