Columnist Peter Jacobi once suggested to Folio: magazine readers that the role of the trade press is “to support an editor on fire.” For three decades, I have endeavored to be that editor. Publications are invaluable forums for education, debate, and the sharing of significant events. An excellent publication can be the catalyst in the creation of a shared vision. I have been privileged to serve, and occasionally to create, such publications.I am at heart a developmental editor, chipping away at manuscripts to help authors make their work more clear, correct, and compelling. Copy-editing, which is too often practiced as mere proofreading, is at the center of my vision. In pursuit of better editing I have created and maintained stylebooks, trained editors, compiled sample books of article archetypes, and implemented fact-checking procedures.
