Television Pilot

I have always loved series show- although over the last few years, I have made the transition from television to Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video etc- which I have watched intensively as I work on my own proprietary Netflix-type series. I wrote a great deal of dialogue and action scenes taking place over about 120 years, necessitating research and continual rewriting- and, in terms of writing, created vignettes that were never completely formulated. The reasons I went this route are complex- but the kind of effort I have been doing and the fact I am now working on the pilot episode- has cemented in me a better understanding of what a pilot must do. Everything you do in the pilot must establish the series direction, typically containing main characters, a sense of the plot direction, settings that might be used throughout the series and something occurring powerful enough to make audiences return for the next episode. As most people who have read about the philosophy of dramatic creation, a typical movie or play will have what sometimes critics call "a suspense curve" which means there is a fundamental challenge that must be overcome (sometimes there is more than one). Most series follow this direction-` but that means cleverly constructing characters and events that can continue to hold their audience for season afte season, sometimes for years. Keep this in mind when you construct a pilot with a long-range objective.
