A family in India has accused a doctor of performing a caesarean section on a pregnant woman three and a half months before her due date, and then stitching up the wound after realizing that the fetus was premature.
Authorities at Karimganj Government Civil Hospital in India's Assam state, where the accident occurred, said on Sunday that an investigation was underway to ascertain the facts.
It was alleged that the doctor tried to conceal the matter and asked the pregnant woman's family not to discuss the matter with anyone, but her relatives and neighbors knew about the matter when the patient's health worsened after her discharge from the hospital.
The Indian Express newspaper quoted the hospital administration as saying: "We have received a report of such an incident, we are conducting an investigation to ascertain the facts. Any action against the doctor or any other person, if found to be wrong, will be taken based on the investigation report."
