Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stressed the importance of the strategic alliance and close cooperation between Iraq and the United States in fighting terrorism in Iraq and the region.

A statement by the Iraqi presidency, on Friday, said that Rashid received a phone call from Blinken congratulating him on his election.

Blinken also praised the "peaceful and democratic way" in which the election of the Iraqi president and the formation of the new government took place.

And Blinken renewed, according to the Iraqi presidency, his country's affirmation of support for the Iraqi people.

The new Iraqi president was elected on October 13, and he directly tasked Muhammad al-Sudani with forming the new government, which won the confidence of Parliament on October 27, ending a year of political crisis that engulfed the country.
