Slovenian President Aleksander Ceferin said today, Thursday, that the French Arsene Wenger's plan to hold the World Cup every two years was "pure nonsense", noting that the International Federation of the game (FIFA) considered it logical to abandon that.  The idea finally.

The Swiss president, Gianni Infantino, had indicated last week that the international federation had dropped the project, which drew strong criticism from UEFA and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) in particular.

Infantino said that FIFA had never proposed to change the system of the tournament, which takes place every four years, since the first edition of the World Cup hosted by Uruguay in 1930.

But many were looking at Infantino as one of the supporters of this scheme, especially after his statements he made last January, during which he indicated that holding the World Cup every two years would provide an impetus for African migrants to avoid the risky crossing to Europe, indicating that  They can avoid 'death'.  in the sea'.

Infantino's comments drew widespread criticism at the time.

Ceferin said in a press conference today, Thursday, "We are pleased that FIFA has ordered that the project to hold the World Cup finals every two years should not be discussed once and for all."

Ceferin added: 'This project was not formally proposed by FIFA, but the FIFA supported it.  It's good that they listened to the football community."

"For me, it is very good that this nonsense project is off the table," the UEFA president explained.

Wenger, the former Arsenal manager who serves as head of global football development at the game's governing body, was the main advocate of holding the biennial World Cup, widely promoting that plan ahead of a possible vote.

Infantino claimed that the proposed amendments would generate significant financial returns, if approved, with an increase of $4.4 billion in the first four-year cycle of the new international calendar, which could rise to $6.6 billion if each association also shifted the regional championships to biennial.  .

A vote now seems unlikely in the near future, and Ceferin questioned whether any other major tournaments should be added to the international calendar.

"For new tournaments, I don't think there is much time for new competitions, but let's talk about it and see," Ceferin said.  At the moment, we have not discussed that.”
