The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and declared that nuclear weapons must be removed from the world, and a new era of dialogue, trust, and peace should begin.
According to the Secretary-General, “In 1946, the first General Assembly resolution sought to eliminate nuclear weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction from national armament.
"Now is the time to lift this cloud for good, remove nuclear weapons from our world, and usher in a new era of dialogue, trust, and peace for all people," he added.
Addressing the threat of nuclear weapons has been central to the work of the United Nations since its inception.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations noted that although the total number of nuclear weapons has been declining for decades, there are about 14,000 weapons stockpiled worldwide, which faces the highest level of nuclear risk in nearly four decades.
